A H A R E | The Lockdown Dinner

Set in the aftermath of the COVID-19 lockdown, Ahare, directed by Ayan Acharyya, unfolds within the walls of an upscale apartment where two affluent couples gather for a celebratory dinner. As they indulge in an elaborate spread, their conversation drifts to the heartbreaking stories of migrant workers and struggling families who endured unimaginable hardships, walking miles to their hometowns, battling hunger, and losing their livelihoods.

Their words drip with sympathy, punctuated by the repeated exclamation “Ahare!”, a Bengali expression of pity, yet their actions tell another story. While lamenting the suffering of the poor, they eagerly debate the texture of the kebabs, the secret ingredient in the biryani, and the perfection of the dessert. The contrast is unsettling, exposing a quiet hypocrisy beneath polished manners and privileged comfort. Do they truly care, or is their compassion merely a socially acceptable façade?
